After moving to New York City in September of 1961 Gilbert Shelton dreamed up the idea for his first anti-hero Wonder Warthog and co-created the first story with his friend Bill Killeen during a visit over Thanksgiving break.

When he arrived at Killeen’s to discuss WWH the idea was to do a parody of a superhero strip like Superman. The notion that you could do a superhero parody was first explored in the great MAD Magazine pocket books.

Wonder Warthog took Gilbert and his collaborators to a wider audience, and began to give comic books a whole new cultural meaning as they satirized the super hero genre.
