A look into the office of the the in July of 1973. In August of that year they would publish Gilbert’s “Gasoline Famine” illustration (in Vol. 8 No. 7 Issue 418) on the cover that provided humorous tips for dealing with the national fuel shortage.
These independent publications emerged in response to the information monopoly that the 3 major networks had established, and regularly published anti-war, pro-sexual liberation material. This resonated with a younger generation sandwiched between the culture war at home and ideological war in Vietnam.
